Quick Summary
A seasonal and only slightly silly example of how project management frameworks and development processes can be tailored to provide benefits on any type of project.

What this is

A seasonal and only slightly silly example of how project management frameworks and development processes can be tailored to provide benefits on any type of project — in this case, the project of successfully getting holiday presents for one's friends and family.

Why it's useful

This guideline from founder Cinda Voegtli-derived from an exercise she has used in training workshops-illustrates, even to skeptics, the advantages of imposing basic project management principles on even the most unorthodox "projects." Despite a reaction that such an example just HAS to be too lightweight to be useful, it's a humorous yet convincing demonstration of the impact of PM processes on cost containment, timely delivery, and customer satisfaction. It succinctly and humorously illustrates how project management phase frameworks and related tools are meant to be applied: lightly, with reason, and appropriately unto the goals of the project.

How to use it

Use it personally for a reminder of how even your smallest or simplest projects could benefit from more of a phase framework with checkpoints.

If you're in an organization that thinks "process" is a dirty word, consider using an example like this to demonstrate that the philosophy of a phased management process is actually quite simple and has no nefarious underlying motivation - it is simply meant to help the project be successful, make the customer happy, the company profitable, and the team happier all the way through the project.
