Quick Summary
A one-page form allowing comprehensive assessment and development planning for individual project managers across categories such as management skills, career ambition, and short- and long-term growth potential. Appropriate as an individual coaching/assessment tool as well as a guideline for personnel growth and assignments.

What this is

This one page template helps in defining and ranking qualities and performance important to professional development of project management staff. The assessment categories include overall performance and improvement, while also delving into detailed management skills (like self-management and problem solving abilities), short-term and long-term development potential, and career ambitions.

Why it's useful

Department heads can use this Professional Development Profile template as an assessment tool. It can be used to compare associates in similar jobs, or as a way to gauge readiness for short- and long-term career growth, based on company needs. As the company grows, this tool may also be used for succession planning. By pairing this tool with a career path, the company communicates that employees who meet or exceed the requirements for their existing role have opportunities available for advancement.

How to use it

As an assessment tool: Individual managers and department heads may wish to use these criteria to round out regular professional assessments, or as a component of project manager coaching. Quantifying specific areas of achievement and needed improvement, as well as general trends in performance, can provide guidance in assessing capabilities and appropriate assignments, tracking improvement, and gauging readiness to move on to the next level.

As a departmental skills inventory: Executives and department heads can receive periodic updates of the project management skills and capabilities available in their departments. A side by side comparison provides an overview of which PMs may be best suited to particular types of projects, as well as gaps in capabilities that may need attention.
