Why it's useful

These guidelines are intended to help Project Managers working with a licensee/development partner ensure that the development effort succeeds. It is essential that the Project Manager of a "joint development" licensing project approach the project with as much project management discipline as an internal development effort - using their product development/project management guidelines appropriately.

Some licensees will have a sophisticated development process. The challenge in this case is to make sure that both sides are speaking the same language and that the phase milestones and deliverable requirements of both sides are satisfied. Other licensees will have few, if any, process steps in place. This requires that the licensor company tactfully educate the licensee about the phase deliverables required to ensure the project is successfully completed.
