New to Project Management

Whether you're starting a new project and want help making a good plan, or your hair is on fire in mid-project and you need help fast, we've gathered relevant resources in our knowledge base to help you cut through the theory and get answers, tips, tools and advice fast.

Get started by clicking on the subjects of interest below. Use your browser's Back Key to return to this page - you may have to click the Back Key several times.

Laying the foundation. Start here before you start that new project! The temptation in any project is to start scheduling in detail and jump into detailed development. We'll guide you through what you need to do before that - techniques for making sure that your project is focused on the right goals and has a scope that the team can handle in the tight timeframes that characterize today's projects. Click here for Planning & Scope.

Creating a schedule. Every project is a challenge to schedule and estimate - never enough people, never enough time. How do you know you've identified all the work? To find out what's most important in creating schedules and estimating task durations, read Scheduling & Estimating.

Staying on track. You've got a plan and schedule in place and you're rolling! Now what? How do you keep the project on track? How do you behave day to day? How do you handle change requests from customers and other stakeholders? Is your project in trouble and you need help NOW? Find it in Tracking & Control.

Managing conflict. "People problems" in projects are not just caused by "bad apples". Tensions and conflicts are often a symptom of underlying problems with the project itself (and some conflict can be positive!). Get at those root causes, identify them, and effect "in-flight repairs" on your project. Tools, tips and advice in Conflict and Issue Mgmt.

Catch the "time robbers". Your schedule is slipping and you don't know why. Look out for the "time robbers", the sneak-paths which silently drain away your team's time and your own. We'll show you what to look for and how to better manage your own time in Time Management.

Stay visible, stay synced. Keeping both your team members and your stakeholders informed is crucial to project success. Don't go "opaque" on your management. Keep your project visible to management and keep your team synchronized with good project communication know-how in Communicating.

Tools: the basics. Equip your toolkit with fundamental tools that every project manager should be using. Are you among the 95% of PMs using Microsoft Project? Can PM tools be overused? We'll give you some advice and resources in PM Tools.

The documentation balancing act. Is documentation the last thing that gets done in your projects? Do your plans end up gathering dust on a shelf? Documentation: What is the right level?

Keep your deliverables under control. Keeping track of the emerging pieces of a product or system under development is a special challenge in configuration management. The volatile nature of an emerging design just may not fit into your organization's rules on "steady state" configuration management. And software is a special challenge! We'll give you resources and guide you through the basics in Configuration Management.
